Schizophrenia Recent census estimations show that the world has totaled 300 billion people and this number is growing each day. There are a large number of people that undergo mental and emotional disorders in their everyday life without ever realizing it. Schizophrenia is a wide spread mental disease which is unbearable to endure. Several people suffer from schizophrenia without apprehension that they have anything the matter. Every problem has an initial start and every effect has a cause. Although with schizophrenia, people do not necessarily know how they get it or what “it” is. Schizophrenia is a severe mental disease characterized by unpredictable disturbances in thinking and means a splitting of the mind , which refers to characteristic schizophrenic behavior of withdrawing from reality and thinking in illogical, confused patterns. 6 So even though schizophrenia is defined, it is technically unexplainable. Schizophrenia is a disabling disease that affects about 1% of the population of the world. In America, it affects almost 2 million people. 1 Although a mere one percent seems like an infinitesimal amount of people, the accounts prove it to be an immense amount of enduring lives. “The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 24 million people around the world suffer from schizophrenia.” 2 For example, if one is in a room with three thousand people, twenty four of them will most likely be a victim of schizophrenia. Categorizing schizophrenia is nearly impossible. People may suffer from hallucinations, distorted thoughts or a reduced ability to function in society because of schizophrenia. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) some schizophrenic disorders include: schizophrenia, schizophreniform disorder, schizoaffective disorder, schizoid personality disorder and schizotypal personality 1

disorder. 1 If schizophrenia alone did not seems frightening enough, the several forms of schizophrenia are traumatizing. “We can all be afraid at times. With schizophrenia what you get is a kind of mental conditioning and I am not sure fear ever goes away in this sense.” 3 The disease is scary from an outsider’s point of view but is completely overwhelming for one who actually suffers from schizophrenia.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
