Christia Henry January 25, 2017 Maritime Exploration Ferdinand Magellan and Sir Francis Drake were the first two people to circumnavigate around the world. This means that they each sailed all the way around the world. Although this was a difficult task, they probably had no idea about how difficult it would be. They did not know what type of things they would encounter. They had different reasons for traveling all the way around the globe, but they each followed through with their plans. Ferdinand Magellan was born in Portugal in 1480. He served as a page of the Queen. He became very well educated and showed interest in navigation. He was the first to circumnavigate the globe. His voyage lasted for 3 years. Magellan believed that the Spice Islands could be reached by sailing west. He proposed his theory to the Portugal king, but he was rejected. He then set out to gain support. He proposed his theory once again to King Charles V. King Charles was persuaded to sponsor Magellan’s voyage on March 22. Magellan and his crew departed in September 1519. He took 5 ships. The names of the ships were The Conception, The Conception, The Santiago, The Trinidad, and The Victoria. Magellan and his crew sailed west from Spain, first landing in South America. They landed in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil to restock on supplies. They then sailed to Rio Gallegos, Argentina, because of the weather. They waited there from winter until spring when the weather ceased. The Santiago was sent out to find a route, but was wrecked in May. This delayed the voyage until 1520. When they decided to continue the voyage, they sailed into a strait.
