Exploration Document Carmen Concepcion HUM200 Cultural Artifacts My first work is a painting called The Lamentation by Giotto de Bondone. This is a fresco painting created in 1305 during the Italian Renaissance. The painting is in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, Italy. My second work is a painting called Oath of the Horatii by Jacques-Louis David. This is an oil on canvas painting created in 1784 during Neoclassicism. The painting is in the Louvre Museum, Paris. Common Theme The common theme shared by both works is sacrifice. The Lamentation is about the death of Christ after the betrayal of Judas. In the painting after being put to death Christ is surrounded by family members, friends and angels. Oath of the Horatii is about a trio of brothers who take an oath to their father that they will fight to the death to defend Rome. In the painting you can see the three brothers bound by their raised arms in a salute toward their father. He is holding three raised swords in his left hand and raising his right hand signifying a promise or sacrifice. Personal Experience Sacrifices are something we have all made at one time or another in our lives. For instance, my brothers joined the army and risk their lives whenever they are at war, for us to be safe. I feel that joining the Army, Navy or Marines is a very big sacrifice. A personal sacrifice that I commit every day is putting others before myself. I assist others get their things done before I do mine (even if I'm on a tight schedule). It feels good to see the gratitude on their faces. Profession

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT 1 Sacrifices are committed for different reasons in both paintings I selected. A profession that I feel that is strongly affected by my theme is that of a Police Officer. The Polices Officers are sacrificing themselves so that everyone is safe. For example, Officer Chesna was shot and killed while trying to apprehend a suspect who was wanted for erratic driving and for leaving the scene of a single car accident (Fox, Hilliard & Phillips, 2018). Big or small, good or bad, sacrifices require something to be given up to get what you need/want or to help others. Humanities helps
