GEOG- Chapter 4 Outline Latin America- conquests began 500 years ago, 2/3 speak Spanish, the rest Portuguese, mostly Catholicism, world’s most racially mixed regions o Early Spanish Empire wanted the regions precious metals, Portuguese=producers of dyewoods, sugar products, gold and later coffee o 75% of the 509 million inhabitants live in cities o Economic development is different among each state, usually specialize in two exports o Home of earth’s largest rain forest, greatest river by volume, and massive reserves of natural gas, oil and copper o Most populous state=brazil, next is mexico, rapid population increase has slowed o Many middle class, some states having economic growth but increased disparity w/ Environmental Geography: Neotropical Diversity o Unique tropical landscapes (flora and fauna) but not allover o Moving tectonic plates cause deep oceanic trenches and mountains- prone to powerful earthquakes in Central America Environmental Issues Facing Latin America
