The Power of OneRoald Dahl once said, “The strongest man in the world has the power to inspire others.”Dahl’s words imply that the greatest strength is the power of influence, which can change others lives. In the short story “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World,” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Esteban, an attractive dead man, has the power to inspire others. After being washed up at sea next to the small village, his beautiful body is idolized and preserved by the community. Astonished by his great size and good looks, he takes the hearts of the villagers, and is able to positively inspire the community. The dead man symbolizes the power of change and influences the villagers to make their village great under his name. Esteban, while dead, is able to impact the villagers simply by his looks and size, which reveals that anything - even the smallest things - can lead to change. Through the character Esteban, it is shown that the power toinspire others leads to better lives, because admiration motivates people to improve themselves and their surroundings.In the beginning of the short story, Esteban is respected throughout the village, and is therefore given the power to make a change within the community.
