The Virginian’s place in the American Literary Periods American authors broke away from their British and European heritage as they settled throughout the continent and came into their own styles and topics. The new world offered unexpected experiences and unique ways of surviving. As these folks moved into unsettled territories, their interests changed as well. This resulted in different ways of viewing and writing about that life. Read the handout "Periods of American Literature," the two articles outlining elements of Realism and Naturalism in American Literature, and pages 470-471 in your text book. Make note of the characteristics of both the American Literary Periods of Realism and Naturalism. Using these resources, write an essay describing The Virginian by Owen Wister as a work of American realism and/or naturalism. This is a full essay.
