why is the funding of planned parenthood being debated?
Much of the backlash Planned
Parenthood receives is a result of their performing abortions. Some of that backlash comes from a
moral or religious perspective.
Even if you are against abortion, defunding Planned Parenthood wouldn't stop women from having
them, even if it's by unsafe means. World wide 42 million women choose to abort; 20 million of those
are unsafe abortions and about 68,000 women die from unsafe abortion annually. By defunding planned
parenthood the number of injuries or fatalities caused by improper abortions would likely increase, due
to the lack of a safe and sanitary place to receive the procedure. Defunding planned Parenthood doesn't
only affect the people who choose to abort, those are only a small percent of the people who use
planned parenthood services (Haddad, “Unsafe Abortion: Unnecessary Maternal Mortality”,
).
Only 3% of 3 million women who were treated at a planned parenthood in 2014 were treated for
abortion, so the fact that people would argue against the funding of planned parenthood, simply
because of them disagreeing with 3% is ridiculous. It stands to reason
