Rationalism vs. Empiricism Most important philosophical argument of the period. Descartes (foundationalism), Spinoza, Leibniz = rationalists In common, the commitment of rationalism. Thinking, proving things, innate ideas (born with these ideas) Locke, Berkeley, Hume = empiricists Knowledge rises from experience. John Locke – Empiricist Most famous as a political thinker There are no ideas in the mind without experience. Tabula Rasa and rejection of innate ideas To have ideas we have to have experience. We know why because if they were innate they would be known by children but we do have to teach them. So the mind prior to experience is nothing more than a blank slate. Sensation source of ideas, simple/complex What we experience are ideas. Without the experience of the idea of something you wouldn’t have the capacity to think or obtain it. Simple ideas: hard, salty, soft, sweet Complex Ideas: chair, table, dog, cat Role of abstract ideas The universal categories, names for kinds of things we rely on for communication with each other.
