Hain and Fleck’s (2014) article was very eye opening and gave me more insight of the barriers nurse practitioners face in their role as primary care providers. I was previously aware of the barriers discussed in the article but not to the extreme. Hain and Fleck (2014) provide three main barriers: state practice and licensure, physician related issues, and payer policies. As stated, there is no consistency amongst the 50 states providing nurse practitioners with the same autonomous capabilities to perform their duties regardless of the equivalent level of education required of those practicing in states where full practice authority is recognized (Hain & Fleck, 2014). Physician related issues addressed in this article essentially refer to whether an advanced nurse practitioner is fully competent enough and capable of providing safe and effective patient care independently based on education and knowledge gained throughout their educational (Hain & Fleck, 2014). The final barrier in the article is payer policies.
