Parents Should Not Spank Their Children 2 Parents Should Not Spank Their Children When I was in elementary school in Vietnam, I knew a neighbor who was a bully in my school. He was often punished by his teacher because of bullying his classmates. To find out more about the boy, his teacher invited the parents to talk privately with them. After talking to the boy's parents, the teacher learned that whenever the boy got a low score, his father spanked him, which inadvertently causes the boy to be angry and wants to bully with his classmates to vent the anger. From my example, I think parents should not spank their children. In the past, the methods of child discipline such as beating, hitting, slapping the child were prevalent. It was because the ancients thought that educating their children's discipline in a strict way would make the child afraid and obedient; the stricter the discipline, the better their children are. In addition, a family in the past had too many children, so they did not have much time to learn about each child’s personality individually and teach them thoughtfully. Up to now, although society has improved and people have more knowledge, there are still many parents who still carry backward ideas to discipline their children. Teaching our children by spanking them does not mean that we love them. In this essay, I will prove that spanking is not only a wrong way to discipline children but also makes serious consequences for their development. Firstly, spanking affects the behavior of the children. Most people think that spanking their children will help their children become better. However, according to Elizabeth Gershoff of the University of Texas at Austin, “spanking predicts negative behavior changes—there are no studies showing that kids improve,” (Wenner Moyer and Melinda, 2016, p12). As we all know that kids are so eager to imitate everything around them. Therefore, parents must be very careful when doing anything. The fact that the parents spank their children will make the children imitate them; they will think spanking is a normal action that everyone can do. Moreover,

They will hit other to relieve their moods. The Family Research Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire confirmed that “Children who are spanked are more likely to display increased antisocial behavior (lying or bullying)” (Giles, Dari, 1999, p132). The story of my neighbor is a typical example of how a kid becomes a bully. The fact that the boy hit his classmates was just because he felt unfair when his parents spanked him. Although it was a wrong thing to do, he felt more comfortable after hitting his friends. For this reason, his habit of hitting other people will be formed after so many similar
