Lincoln: A Very Short Introduction is split into seven chapters that each focus on one of Lincoln’s beliefs in an important topic that caused controversy and problems during the 19th century for Lincoln and the United States. These topics, in order of chapters, include equality, advancement in society, the law, liberty, debates and their importance, slavery, and lastly, how the country could be reunited. Since Lincoln is one of few Americans who is known around the entire world it may seem like he would be well known but Guelzo writes this book to explain how Lincoln was a very private man and although many people may know that he read jokes from a book out loud to the people around him, they may not know things such as that he was a very deep thinker who read extensively on a wide variety of subjects.
