Overview : Chapter 8 focuses on the methods of sustaining biodiversity that involve protecting the habitats that endangered species live in. Hence the subtitle the ecosystem approach.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Biodiversity : can be defined as the variety of biological systems present on this planet. Four facets of diversity are recognized: functional (chemical processes, energy flow, matter recycling), ecological (what types of ecosystems there are), genetic (consider humans; pigmentation, strength, height, susceptibility to diseases), and species (number of species in a habitat).--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why is earths biodiversity suffering ? Answer: mostly because of human activities, which include agriculture, industry, economics (production/consumption), and recreation.
