Chapter 15 Outline: Air Pollution Overview: Know the types, sources, and effects of chemicals that pollute outdoor and indoor environments that threaten our health and natural ecosystems. Why are lichens mentioned in the beginning? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Atmosphere: All you need to know about the atmosphere is that the innermost layer is contained within the troposphere . - How much air is contained within this layer? - What is the composition? - What is the function of the ozone layer? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Outdoor air pollution: Most intense over cities for obvious reasons; mainly from the combustion of fossil fuels. - Differentiate between the sources. - Only need to know about primary pollutants and how they move around. - What are major types of pollutants? Is CO2 one of them? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Smog : Light and nitrogen oxides and volatile hydrocarbons combine to form a mixture of air pollutants. - What causes brown air smog and how does temperature influence the composition of smog? - What major city is afflicted by this (given in lecture)? - How does industrial smog differ from photochemical smog?
