It was founded in 1984 by two engineering students Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin, both studying in Canada. In the early days, however, the company was known by the name Research In Motion (RIM), and this has since changed to what is today known as The Blackberry Company. RIM became the first company to develop a wireless data technology, and this led to its popularity. Over the years, BlackBerry devices have been known to be classy and therefore placing them at the top of the mobile marketing ranks. The devices have been used by the people of class including the heads of state, the business executives, Hollywood celebrities and many more. Its market ranking on the global platform has been appealing until competitors came in. The main threat to the Blackberry Company has been Android and the Apple software companies. The company started developing products for the Mobitex wireless packet-switched data communication networks that were mostly used by the military, the police, the ambulance services and the firefighters (Swanson 94). In 1992, Jim Balsillie joined the company and became its co-CEO alongside Lazardaris and greater innovations later followed in the technology company including the release of its first colored screen device the Nasdaq 100, in 2003. The number of Blackberry subscribers increased at a high rate from two million by the end of 2004 to four million in 2005, an achievement that led to the two CEOs being ranked as some of the top 100 most influential persons by the Time magazine. In 2007, RIM gained a great value and had a market capitalization that surpassed $67 billion. It is also the same year that the company hit 10 million subscribers but also a new threat came into the market-Apple’s first iPhone (Alexandra 35). With Apple's product in the market, RIM's sales became unstable. In 2008, RIM's stock hit a high of $149.90 but later fluctuated drastically in the same year to as low as selling shared at below $50.
