R ESPIRATION A SSIGNMENT Figure 1 (6 points): Show an image of the labscribe spirogram under resting conditions with axes properly labeled. Be sure to include normal breathing, a maximal inhalation and maximal exhalation. Label tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, and expiratory reserve volume. Calculate respiratory rate, tidal volume, pulmonary ventilation, dead space volume and alveolar ventilation. Show all calculations below the figure. Question 1 (4 points): Describe how the action of particular muscles changes lung volumes and pressures leading to air movement in and out of the lungs under resting conditions. Explain why normal expiration is a passive process while a maximal or forced expiration is an active process. Figure 2 (4 points): Show an image of a maximal inhalation/exhalation with labscribe cursors placed to measure FEV 1.0 . Indicate on your image where forced exhalation begins and ends (FVC). Include in the legend the value for FVC, FEV 1.0 and the ratio/percentage for resistance.
