Week III: Telemedicine for Rural-Based Health FacilityProblem statementCanon hospital is providing an exceptional healthcare service to a community with alarge population. However, the hospital is approximately 100 miles and 150 miles away fromtwo major hospitals. Therefore, the community is in need of telemedicine infrastructure. The lackof tertiary center has force Conan hospital to transfer approximately 50 percent of its ICUpatients, as well as patients who are presenting with stroke symptoms to the next major hospitals.Patients and caregivers are forced to relocate to a rehab center outside Canon hospital, and itresults in a meager customer’s satisfaction rate and loss of revenue. Also, the facility has notbeen able to follow-up with any patient.To improve access to care, senior medical staff in the ICU and neurology departments atCanon Hospital are proposing to maintain the proper services for their department includingestablishing a rehabilitation program for stroke patients and reinforce follow-ups in the canonhospital community. Creating a reliable telemedicine infrastructure will require Canon hospital toconsider implementing electronic stethoscopes as well as instituting high telephone connectivitywith its tertiary center. Therefore, to improve service delivery, the facility must implement aneffective teleconsultation, electronic stethoscopes framework, increased telephony connectivityto improve referral to tertiary centers as well as bolster medical follow-ups.The scope of the IT solutionIntroduction and implementation of any new technology is a complex process, andincorporating telemedicine practices at Canon Hospital is no exception.
