What is a Sentence? A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It begins with a capital letter and closes with an end mark, either a period, a question mark or an exclamation mark.

Core Sentence Components Clause: basic unit of communication consisting of a subject and a predicate Subject: person, place, thing, ideas, concepts Predicate: verb and all aspects under the influence of the verb

Types of Clauses Independent Clause that can stand alone There is a subject, verb, and complete thought Example: John passed the ball.

Types of Clauses Subordinate (also called dependent clauses) begins with a subordinate conjunction or a relative pronoun a subordinate clause cannot stand alone as a sentence because it does not provide a complete thought

Classifying Sentences By Construction Simple Single independent clause. Sulphuric acid was added to the solution. Compound 2 simple sentences joined together. Sulphuric acid was added to the solution, and black acid smoke came out from the flask. Complex 1 independent clause and 1 or more subordinate clauses. When the students tried the experiment, it did not work at all. Compound-Complex : Additive: contains at least 2 independent clauses and at least 1 subordinate or relative clause. When sulphuric acid was added to the solution, black acrid smoke billowed from the flask and foam spouted out the top.
