1 Anne Murtha Instructor: Keith Graham IHP-450 Healthcare Management and Finance 3-2 Reflective Journal: Mini Case Study According to (Nowicki, 2015), in looking at Exhibit 6.5 classifying costs in relation to a unit of product or service, the “fixed costs remain constant and variable costs change in relation to volume”. In relating that to a physician’s office the cost would be the service the physician’s office has provided to the patient. In looking at Exhibit 6.6 (Nowicki, 2015), “fixed costs change in relation to volume, and variable costs remain constant per unit”. Since the physician provides a service there would be no overhead cost for storing product but a fixed cost of running utilities and use of equipment. In order to increase profitability without raising rates I would recommend implementing the following three courses of action. At first I thought of increasing the physician’s office hours, which could work but that means the office would have to bare the increase expense of utilities and staff needed to extend the office hours and cover the extra overhead costs.
