In the ancient world Rome and Greece were huge empires thateach had huge numbers. The Romans population was vast innumbers. Their population size was upwards of 50 millionpeople (1) through the mediterranean up into some parts ofwhat now is Britain. Due to the vast size of their populationtheir nature was to focus heavily on military protective forces.Also due to their huge size trade was necessary for thesepeople to keep growing. They had vast numbers of templesand buildings, much like, what we think of as a city in todaystime.Ancient Greece was also much into merchants trade, as theRomans were.
