Davis 1 Trynity Davis Period 4 AP Literature, Mr. Brett 28 August, 2018 All Quiet on the Western Front Essay All Quiet on the Western Front is a novel written by Erich Maria Remarque describing what it was like to be in the trenches of World War One. The novel follows Paul Baumer and the rest of the Second Company as they are fighting a war for their country and fighting to keep themselves alive. Remarque uses many different narrative techniques throughout his novel, All Quiet on the Western Front (AQWF). Each of the techniques that are used have their own way of bringing the harsh reality of war to light. The techniques that helped make Remarque’s novel more powerful would be; characterization, conflict, and tone. Throughout AQWF Remarque has a very unique way of bringing the characters to life. In plenty of other novels the characters are very flat or one-dimensional, but Remarque gives them life and makes them seem authentic. Paul Bäumer is the narrator of the novel as well as the protagonist. Throughout the novel Remarque clearly illustrates that the war is having a negative effect on the company.
