Biography of Juan de PlasenciaJuan de Plasencia or Juan Portocarrero (his birth name) was born to a well-respected and admired family in Plasencia in the region of Extremadura, Spain in the early 16th century. He was one of the seven children of a captain of a Spanish sailing vessel called schooner. Juan de Plasencia grew up during the period known as the Siglo de Oro. His upbringing was spent against the backdrop of the spiritual and religious resurgence affected by this age. This was also the reason why he entered the Franciscan formation, because he was inspired by the ambience of this age.Juan de Plasencia was actually one of the first batch of the Franciscan missionaries who came in the Philippines. On May 31, 1577, Juan, with his other companions, left Seville for the port of Sanlucar de Barrameda, and on the night of the 24th of June sailed for the highseas. And on July 2, 1578, they arrived in the Philippines, at a port in Cavite, a few kilometers south of Manila. As soon as he arrived, he joined forces with Diego de Oropesa, and they both started spreading the good news of God to the areas of Laguna de Bay and Tayabas, Quezon, in Quezon Province, where he founded several towns. As years goes by, he and his other preachers, because of their untiring work and missionary zeal, founded and organized large number of towns in the provinces of Bulacan,
