“She had become accustomed to being lonely. She was used to walking alone and to being considered 'different.' She did not suffer too much.” Chapter 20, pg. 144 When Francie said she sat next to the girl with bugs in her hair Katie immediately went into action. She scrubbed Francies' hair then dipped her hairbrush in some kerosene oil and braided her hair as tightly as she could. Francie has never caught lice or any sickness thanks to Katie. Unfortunately, the oil stunk up the school which made kids not want to be near Francie causing her to constantly feel isolated and rejected by her peers. Kerosene oil?! This is extremely dangerous to Francie because if it lights she could die from it. Also, how do we know it works. It says she was accustomed to being alone due to the smell of the oil. If nobody would go near her how would she even catch lice? Apparently, in the 1900s, this was a common practice to get rid of lice. And I thought the smell of mayonnaise in my sister's hair was bad. “As she skipped away she heard momma ask the lady next to her “who’s that man over there the one in the uniform lookin this way.” Chapter 24, pg. 165 The Nolan’s are on an educational boat trip. After the boat docked the kids ran around spending their tickets. Since Francie gambled her tickets away she asked sergeant Michael Mcshane. The man gives her 3 tickets and then asks if Katie was her mom. Francie says yes and the man she’s pretty and walks away. When Francie goes back to see her mom and doesn’t tell her what he said, only that he gave her 3 tickets. This is the first time she meets her second husband. I didn’t think that the random encounter had anything to do with the story. The first time I read this I thought that it was an extremely odd thing to put in. What’s weird about this is that Johnny is still alive. They both seem to like each other but obviously,
