Researcher Team 2 T-Test Definition of T-Test A t-test is an analysis of two population means through the use of statistical examination; a t-test with two samples is commonly used with small sample sizes, testing the difference between the samples when the variances of two normal distributions are not known. The t-test is any statistical hypothesis test in which the test statistic follows a Student’s t distribution under the null hypothesis. Proposed by William Sealy Gosset Statistician for Guinness breweryin Dublin, Ireland Purpose: cheaply monitor the quality of beer brews Published in Biometrika in 1908 (now 109 years old) but was forced to use a pen name, “Student’s T-test” 3 Types of t-test 1. Independent sample t-test- used to compare two means for situation in which each participant is assigned to only one condition. 2. Paired sample t-test- used to compare two means for situations in which every participant is in both samples.
