The automobile industry is an ever-changing entity that keeps the world connected through innovation, innovation that is needed to keep the market going, as American auto owners are always looking to reduce their dependence on foreign oil. Enter Elon Musk and his contribution to the market with his brand known as Telsa. The car company created a niche for some time as the world’s only all-electric non-hybrid auto manufacture. Elon Musk and his Leadership.Elon Musk was recently listed as 30thin Forbes magazine’s “50 Greatest World Leaders.” What makes Elon a great leader? Many would describe Elon Musk as a transformational leader. “Dolly Singh, former HR head at SpaceX, says about Elon Musk, “The thing that makes Elon is his ability to make people believe in his vision.” JimCantrell, SpaceX’s first engineer, adds, “…Most of us can’t conceive these things working; he can’t conceive it failing.” (Blazek, 2015). Elon makes his employees believein what the mission of Tesla is. He is also known to sleep in the office, forgoing a home life. In this mold he exhibits a high Inspirational Motivation, as he wants the people of Tesla to become as motivated to the company’s success as he is. As a transformationalleader the vison for the future that Musk has must be adopted by his followers (employees) to ensure that the vison is universal throughout the company and the employees will would not want to diminish that vision. To be a transformational Leader you must also understand some of the traits that make Musk such a leader. Elon Musk does exhibit at least four trait that are comparable with
leadership. He is very intelligent (University of PA, Stanford), self-confident, determinedto succeed, and has integrity. Musk has been known accept a failure if he learns from itand does better the next time. He has been quoted as saying “failure is an option here, if you’re not failing you’re not innovating enough”. Musk also has an eco-social conscience after joining President Trumps business advisory council in early 2017, he later quit when the president opted the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord, later tweeting “Leaving the agreement is "not good for America or for the world,"Constraints on TeslaOne problem facing Tesla is its production and profitability. Statistics show that people are willing to buy electric cars but not willing to pay more than a gas powered automobile.
