Introduction
The need to align IT with the business process, mission, and strategic direction of the
organization has been a key priority for many companies. Enterprise Architecture
(EA) has proved to be the most successful approach to align business with IT.
The
use of EA ease the complexity associated with running organization or system by
providing a framework in which different part of the organization are provided with a
clear direction and platform to work with each other. The main purpose of EA is to
create uniform working environment across the organization’s business unit and
functional area. More and more companies are realizing the important benefits of EA
which is they are adapting different type of EA frameworks based on the type of
business they are in. As a result, Enterprise Architects have seen their importance
increase rapidly. ‘Enterprise architect is a newer skill that's emerged on our platform
over the past quarter, but one that's growing steadily. From March 2017 to April 2017,
we've seen a 75 percent increase in the number of job postings for 'enterprise
architect,' particularly among large enterprise organizations who are adopting
service-oriented architecture (SOA) and those who are instigating technology and
business process change within the organization.’ (Florentine, Web) There are many
type of EA frameworks available that serve different type of organizational size and
needs. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the Open Group Architecture
Framework (TOGAF). TOGAF was first adapted as a comprehensive EA framework in
1995 by The Open Group by adding on an earlier framework version Technical
Architecture Framework for Information Management (TAFIM) that was originally
devised by the Department of Defense. This paper will discuss the purpose, scope,
principles, structures and advantage and disadvantage of the TOGAF.
