Castro 1 Maggie Castro Intercultural Communication Professor Johnson 06/24/2018 Preparing for International Employment World cultures are being intermixed quickly with the boom in technological growth. The internet has helped us cross proverbial borders, has made intercultural communication easier, and has placed information at our fingertips. “The challenge of living in a multicultural world is the need to transcend the unpredictability of intercultural interactions, to cope with the accompanying fears that such interactions often engender, and to feel joy and comfort in the discovery of cultural variability.” (Lustig & Koester, 2013) We can no longer deny that intercultural competence is crucial for “personal survival, professional success, national harmony, and international peace.” (Lustig & Koester, 2013) There are things that we can do to increase our intercultural competence and be ethical intercultural communicators. When communicating with a member of another culture, whether you belong to the host culture or are visiting, you should address members of the other culture with respect, attempt to perceive and describe the world as that person’s culture does, be encouraging of members of the different culture to express themselves how they feel comfortable, and try to find commonalities between yourself and members of the other culture. (Lustig & Koester, 2013) You can also visit different cultures to learn them better,
