Recent historical investigations have called into question whether or not Equianos narrative is genuine, pointing to credible evidence that he was probably born in the Carolinas to slave parents and never lived in Africa. These scholars assert that his supposed life narrative is probably an assimilation of stories he heard from other slaves and other free Africans during his life and travels. How does this alter your view of the account? Does it matter if the experiences were actually Equianos or if they were merely compiled by him?
