1Joseph MayMr. Hall7-16-2018HIS 109ESSAY: 1900-1929In between this period starting with war, and ending with war, this era may have been the Kickstarter to what is now modern America. As the fast-growing big cities begin to settle in, and boom towns slowly become permanent communities, the foundation of America up to now starts to be laid. Whether it be war culture, international diplomacy, or even the traditional belief system of American, these changes were an early picture of what ethics and political frame not only here at home, but across the world (620).The year early end of the first decade of the new century begins in the middle of a war that the United States had been fighting for seemed to be a minimal time. The Cuban war of 1898would be one of the first gears in the cog of what would set the nation on the path to be a power among powers. As the country’s allegiance seemed to grow thicker, so would it’s strength in all things including politics. In 1904 the newly elected president, Theodore Roosevelt would come to be the spearhead of the effort on imperialism to establish the foundation of a global balance of power. Behind Roosevelt’s lead, the U.S. committed to the phrase “speak softly and carry a big stick” in which they should build an active and powerful military, for diplomacy only works if you have the strength to back it up. Roosevelt earned the reputation of having a strong but peaceful grip throughout his presidency, such as helping establish an open door policy with China, and building the Panama Canal, a key factor towards the creation of a powerful Navy.
