Shivani Burra Dr. Jones Barbour Topic Proposal Paper March 26, 2018 The Little Mermaid Portrays the Public Memory of Women in Society I want to write my final paper on The Little Mermaid , specifically looking at the Disney film and the novel written by Hans Christian Andersen. The film and book are both widely popular and have been since the Andersen wrote his book in 1837. Walt Disney Pictures released their version of this princess story over 150 years later in 1989. The two versions have a similar plot line but different endings. I want to talk about what the differences between the two versions shows us about the evolving notions about women and more simply how this cartoon shows the various ways women are portrayed in society. Throughout the semester, we have discussed in class how women and minorities are not often represented in public memory, and while this is true, we can also turn to abnormal venues to see how women are being represented.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
