Management Perspectives and Sectoral Issues in the Middle East and North Africa March 1 st , 2018 What are the key variables behind high levels of unemployment amongst women and the youth in the Mena region? What policy changes are required to address this trend? Introduction The Middle East and North Africa region has been facing a vast assortment of problems since many years. Whether these problems are being caused by the inhabitants of the region itself or by outside interference is a subject of constant debate and discussion. The entirety of the region is not like this however, certain countries in the Middle East have flourished and have been developed to almost an absurd level. The area has produced some fantastic entrepreneurs, architects, businessman and engineers. This level of prosperity in the region also ended up bring great prosperity for family owned businesses. The economy of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries has attracted the attention of the researcher, academia and development organization. The reason of attraction of the research and development organizations is high unemployment rate in the youth and women, in the world[Ang12]. Moreover, the researcher has investigated around the population with purpose to highlight the micro and macro determinants of high unemployment in youth and women in the region. However, after the multiple debts and investigations, the development organizations, academia and researcher has fail to develop and framework, for the region to end the struggle against unemployment in the region. An investigation has been conducted by the Spiering, Smits and, Verloo, (2014) to inspect determinates of the women unemployment, at micro and macro level. The finding of their research was drawing economic and financial position of a man to have considerable effect over women’s education and employment rate. The results also stress the importance of education as a major road towards women’s empowerment and equality in these countries. Unfortunately, women don’t enjoy the most freedom in Middle East and North Africa region. Despite recent amendments in laws that allow women to drive many of them still feel oppresse. 13 of the 15 countries with the lowest rates of women participating in their labor force are in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) according to the 2015 Global Gender Gap Report (2015). Yemen has the lowest rate of working women of all, followed by Syria, Jordan, Iran, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Lebanon, Egypt, Oman, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Turkey 1
