SHOULD WE LIMIT UNION POWER? THE WAGES AND EMPLOYMENT IMPACT OF UNIONS Introduction: What is a union? When a party is being made or a number of people join hands and work together for a same purpose especially in a political context, such a group of people is known as a union. In other words we can say that a union is a group of workers joined in a specific party for improving their conditions of working and proving beneficial for each other in common goals and interest. When you have a Union it means that you can meet together on a same platform and negotiate with management over any problem related to you and your job, including salaries, advantages, and working conditions. Unions mainly have a contract for its members; it is truly democratic in nature. A Union contract is a document that binds you to the terms and conditions of the union and where the agreements are put in writing. Having a Union gives you a stronger opportunity of working with better management to make the company stronger, more progressing, and a better place to work. Roles of union A number of tasks are carried out by the unions. They negotiate with the other parties on behalf of their members working under a safe environment on wages, working hours and working condition, salary bonus and overtime for the work. These areas include the basic salary, bonus payment, off days, medical allowance, promotion prospective, travelling allowance, maternity and paternity rights and jobs security. According to the conditions and situations, unions try to protect and improve workers’ rights and living standards. They also provide information for their members about the common topics of discussion among all the members of the union for example about the services provided by the government after retirement. Unions provide a helping hand with education and training schemes and schedules. They also participate in taking measures to facilitate their members as the need of the whole society. Some unions also provide a range of advantages to their members including other type of pays and wages like unemployment pay. Moreover, many unions get involved in pressurizing their governments to pass a law of their own choice or to adopt legislation, which will benefit their workers in general, for example as fixing a national minimum wage which will facilitate common labor of the country and will prove beneficial for the society. 1

This attitude of unions to carry out the tasks on their own is depicted as union power. Where the union power is a blessing for the members of the union at the other hand sometimes it causes problems to the government and some other factors are also being affected.
