Cory Hudson Mr. Hudson ENG 101-026 24 October 2016 “Coming to Terms” With Texts [MLA] Harris, Joseph. “Coming to Terms.” Rewriting: How to Do Things with Texts. Utah State UP, 2006, pp. 13-33. Joseph Harris describes the reading of and the use of a text in one’s writing as a coming to terms ” with a text (15). When one comes to terms with a text, she has a rich understanding of it. She grasps the author’s intent, but rather than stopping at a basic understanding of the author’s purpose, she finds a way to make use of the text in the furthering of her individual concerns and personal beliefs (14-15). Harris breaks down the process of coming to terms with a text into a three-part operation: 1) Defining the author’s “ project ,” 2) Noting “ keywords or passages,” and 3) Assesing the “ uses and limits” (15).
