Nurs 6521 Advanced Pharmacology Week8 According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2018), 1.1 millions of United States population have HIV and approximately 1 in every 7 people do not know that they have HIV disease. However, the discovery of a combination of three medication regimen called HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy or the ART (antiretroviral therapy) has given breathe of new life or strength to HIV infected persons not to give up fighting HIV disease. These three drugs regimen combined into one drug has observably increased HIV infected individual's life expectancy reducing the level of virus in the body, helping people to live healthier lives, as well as decreasing the chances of transferring HIV to others. The antiretroviral therapy (ART) lowers the viral infectious nature of HIV infection and the risks of contracting HIV through sexual intercourse by heterosexual couples where one partner is infected and the other is not. The discovery of AZT drug in 1994 was also promising in preventing a mother from transferring HIV infection to the fetus (CDC, 2018). Although there has been a decrease in HIV infection, there are still work need to be done because annual infections and diagnoses have increased among some groups. HIV Cases Attributed to Increased Complacency Due to More Advanced Drug Treatment Years ago, people treated HIV as a scary, very fatal disease that meant certain death, so they took precautions, and take medicines, but today, people's attitude has changed. Some have started treating HV/AIDS as a manageable disease like other diseases such as hypertension, and diabetes so they feel no need to worry nor protect themselves. I think that part of the problem is that the introduction of a combination of three medication regimen into one drug therapy has helped HIV infected individual by decreasing the number of medications they take each day, some mistaken it to mean that they are getting well so they skip/stop taking medications leading to the virus resistance to the drug (Lewis, 2010). Also, the understanding of HIV infected person that the new drugs HAART, AZT, and ART have lowered his or her viral infectious capacity may induce the individual to start having unprotected sexual intercourse. We see the sad and destructive consequences of people who seem to be willing to risk HIV infection for pleasure. If the HIV infected person is an injection drug user, he or she may abandon safer injection use practices.
