e:Topic 4 DQ 1“A questionnaire is a document used to gather self-report data via self-administration of questions” (Polit & Beck, 2017, p. 741). Questionnaires can be mailed, given out in person, or a computer-generated survey can be used. Advantages of questionnaires include the following: the option for anonymity, questionnaires are a less costly option, and interviewer bias will not come into play (Polit & Beck, 2017). “An interview is a data collection method in which an interviewer asks questions of a respondent, either face-to-face or by telephone” (Polit & Beck, 2017, p. 732). Interviews are notanonymous; they are more costly and risk interviewer bias. Regardless, interviews are preferableto questionnaires for most research intentions because people are more likely to respond when interviewed face-to-face versus ignoring a mailed survey. Interviews target most audiences, including a population that may be young, old, illiterate, or blind, and they require computer access to be completed (Polit & Beck, 2017).
