Steven M Rector ENV 100 Principles of Environmental Science University of Phoenix Professor Andrew Walsh July 2, 2018 Glimmerville City Council: I am of the understanding that your city is experiencing a grass carp overpopulation. The City of Sparksville has begun steps to reduce our grass carp overpopulation and restore the balance of the ecosystem in our reservoir. Our goal is return our reservoir to a balanced ecosystem that maintains a relatively stable population across all native species over time. Our reservoir was not a balanced ecosystem not so long ago. Run-off of fertilizer from neighboring farms spurred excess growth of aquatic grass that began to clog up our waterways (Episode 1). In an effort to manage that excess aquatic grass, the grass carp was introduced to the ecosystem. There is no natural predator for the grass carp so the population continued to grow unchecked (Episode 1). The grass carp essentially crowd out native species. This ecological succession of the grass carp is what we in Sparksville are attempting to reverse.
