Week 2 Discussion 2Hello Class,For this discussion I decided to select the film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. In this film there three main types of lighting used during this film; low-key lighting, high-key lighting and three-point lighting. High-key lighting is a design that is “very bright over everything with a few shadows and relatively low contrast between the lightest and darkest parts of the scene” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs. 2014). This style of lighting is normally used in scenes that are happy, peaceful or to imply an upbeat mood. For example, in the scene where Frodo becomes excited to see Gandalf enter into the shire is a representation of a use of high-key lighting incorporated with natural lighting. The entire scene is bright and seems to be peaceful. The use of high-key lighting and natural light from the sun helps to showcase the scenery and the joy of those in the background. As this clip switched to the scene of Bilbo Baggins the cinematographer switched to three-point lighting. The use of three-
