i PAGE 1 PAG E 6 Running Head: The Importance and History of MADD Abstract In this paper I will explain what my paper is going to be about through my introduction. Then I be explaining why MADD was created. While clarifying the problem that led to the creation of MADD and how the problem was identified as a social problem. I will then discuss some of the policies created as a result of MADD's influence. As well as the problems experienced while implementing the policies and the effects of these social policies on human services delivery. Finally, I will conclude my paper. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a non-profit agency that began in the 1980’s to promote for harsher laws in opposition to driving while under the effect of alcohol and underage drinking. In addition, Mother Against Drunk Driving imparts support services for people that become casualties of individuals that drive under the influence. There is no difference to MADD if it is the veritable victim or the injured parties family members. Prior to Mothers Against Drunk Driving taking the initiative into generating awareness to the problem of driving under the influence; the penalties had been extremely merciful. The individual often had very minuscule to no jail time.

Likewise there are more severe punishments to the individuals that are charged with the offense. In this essay I will discuss the reason MADD was created, the problems that led to its creation, and how the issue was identified as a social problem. Furthermore, I will explain the policies created as a result of MADD’s influence, the issues that came with implementing the policies, and finally the effects of these social policies on human services delivery. On May 7, 1980, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, also known as MADD, was constructed by the founder Candice Lightner. She formed this agency following the death of her thirteen-year-old daughter, Cari, by an intoxicated driver (Friedrich, 1985). Candice identified with other mothers that desired to assist in taking an opposition towards the circumstances that create the tragedies connected with alcohol, drunk driving and drugged victims. Lightner’s oldest daughter, while on a school field trip, was killed by a drunk-driving incident. Her daughter’s accuser was in jail, two days prior to the
