What Is Gun Control About? “Gun Control” has also been referred to by the term firearms regulations. This is an abundant term that covers every sort of constraint on the types of firearms that can be sold and bought, what individuals are allowed to possess or sell these firearms, where and how they are allowed to be stored and carried, what responsibilities the sellers has that lets them audit a buyer, what commitments both a seller and buyer have to report business dealings to the government.

Why Should There Be More Gun Control? The Second Amendment does not mean an unlimited rights to own guns to American civilians. While gun laws have been around longer then the Second Amendment, gun control laws still need to be made stricter. More gun laws would reduce deaths caused by firearms considering there has been a total of 464,033 total gun deaths between 1999 and 2013, 270,237 suicides (58.2% of total deaths), 174,773 homicides (37.7%) and 9,983 unintentional deaths (2.2%). Guns are the leading cause of death by homicide (66.6% of all homicides) and by suicide (52.2% of all suicides). Firearms are the 12th leading cause of all deaths. High-capacity magazines should be banned from civilians being allowed to buy them because they are too often used in mass murder killing sprees. From a Mother Jones investigation they have discovered that, “high-capacity magazines were used in at least 50% of the 62 mass shootings between 1982 and 2012. When high-capacity magazines were used in mass shootings, the death rate rose 63% and the injury rate rose 156%.” (Follman and Aronsen, 2013). There needs to be more gun control laws to keep women protected from domestic abusers and stalkers. A woman's risk of being murdered increases greatly if a gun is present during a domestic dispute. In American Progress it was stated that, “ b etween 2001 and 2012 six thousand, four hundred and ten women were killed by a gun due to an intimate partner in the United States.” (Gerney and Parsons, 2014) Guns have rarely been used in self-defense. As stated in the Firearm Violence article, “out of the t wenty-nine million, six hundred and eighteen thousand, three hundred violent crimes committed between 2007 and 2011, two hundred and thirty five thousand, seven hundred (0.79%) of the victims protected themselves with the threat to use or used a firearm. It is the least-employed protective behavior.” (Planty and Truman, May 2013) More gun control would lead to fewer suicides. As stated by the CDC’s Data & Statistics , “ between 1999 and 2013 there were 270,237 firearm suicides in the United States, accounting for about 52% of all suicides during those years.” (October 21, 2014) There would be fewer accidental deaths if compulsory safety protocols were enacted by the gun control laws.

Why Should There Be More Gun Control? Part 2 Legally owned weapons have been frequently stolen and used by criminals. In the Firearms Stolen during Household Burglaries and Other Property Crimes article it states that, “between 2005 and 2010, 1.4 million guns
