The FBI defines a serial killer as someone who had committed 3 or more murders within a certain period of time. Characteristics of someone who kills tend to be those who lack emotion and remorse, among many others (FBI, 2010). B.History and Statistics of Murders in South CarolinaIn 2016 the violent crime rate in SC was higher than the national average by 26.38%. South Carolina is home to many murderers who have made national news due to the details of their crimes. C.Thesis StatementPee Wee Gaskins, Susan Smith, Dylann Roof, and Todd Kohlhepp are among the most notorious killers in South Carolina history. The combination of the background and upbringing of the killer, their choice along with the number of victims, their motive and method of the murders,and their time in prison makes these murderers unforgettable.Pee Wee Gaskins A. Background/UpbringingDonald Henry Gaskins, Jr., better known as Pee Wee was born to a poor and young mother, Molly. His father was very wealthy and was Molly’s neighbor. Gaskins was teased in school for his size and bruises.B.Victim Choice/Number of Victims While in prison for attempted murder, Pee Wee murdered his first victim in hopes to become a “Power Man”. He preferred female victims, but that didn’t stop him from killing males. He claimed to have murdered 80-90 people in what he referred to as his “coastal killings”. Gaskins said his “coastal killings” led to his “serious killings”. Victims of his “serious killings:” were people who Gaskins in some way knew. Ultimately, Gaskinsconfessed to as many as 100 slayings (Query, 2017).
