Vietnamese Nationalist Movements The Vietnam War, as it is known to the Western World, occurred from 1961 to 1975. According to the Vietnamese however, it is known as the American War to allow for differences with conflicts with other nations. The war is known by many other names such as the “Second Indochina War” according to the scholars and ‘‘Anti-U.S. War of National Salvation’’ or the ‘‘War of Liberation’’ according to the communists in Vietnam. The names given to the war were significant because they show the values behind the war based on the different perspectives. For the Vietnamese communists, it was a war against America and a war for the liberation of their values. The main purpose of this essay is to underline the basis on which the Vietnamese nationalist movement was based as well the ideals they followed. It also explores how they framed their arguments. The essay will also highlight the intellectual ideals that were part of the argument and the response from the French colonial government against this resistance.
