Postcolonial Troubles in Spanish America There were emerging challenges in the new nations in Spanish America after they acquired their independence. There was a new found liberalism and the freedom to use the law as a guide for reforms. The creation of new liberal republics was a major challenge at a time of Civil War. The main troubles arose from the economic destruction that had occurred as a result of the war. There was a definite need to restructure and this was one of the main issues as there were camps that were calling for quicker reforms while there were those that were calling for the reforms to be done slower. Consequently, there was the emergence of two groups: liberals and conservatives. The liberals wanted changes faster while the conservatives were more concerned with retaining the status quo. The conservatives were not impressed by some of the liberal policies. The liberals on the other hand wanted to reduce the power that the Catholic Church had in the region.
