David Grauer November 16, 2007 HCl/DCl Molecular Spectroscopy: Taking and Analyzing the Spectra of HCl and DCl Introduction : This classic lab is designed to first synthesize HCl and DCl for the purposes of FT-IR analysis. The FT-IR analysis illustrates vibrational and rotational energy transitions. From the FT-IR spectra, we will be able to derive various physical information about both HCl and DCl molecules. Please see previous notebook pages 7 and 8 for procedural information. Instrumental setup: The following apparatus was used for both the HCl and DCl preparations. It allowed for the reaction to be run in a vacuum, limitid side reactions and assuring a degree of purity for the DCl. The vacuum also allowed for a rough estimate of the pressure of HCl or DCl gas produced. The FT-IR spectrometer employs infrared radiation to give a picture of vibrational and rotational quantum states. A schematic of the machine follows.
