Cesar Fortuno Period.1 9/12/18 Music Lessons Essay Mary Oliver’s poem “Music lessons” is about a teacher who sees herself diving into the music and stealing the spotlight from the girl “sometimes, in the middle of the lesson, we exchange places”. The teacher finds herself in a home where it closed with her sons and husbands lost pictures. “I leaped rock over rock to the top” is used to signify her struggle of coping with the lost her loves ones. Playing the keys helps her forget about the tragedy, but she still feels alone and thinks if death will end this suffering. The poem consists of 4 quatrains that hold music devices such as rhyme, consonance, and assonance. In lines 2-3 we see rhyme in the final words of each line ending with a similar vowel such as “handing” and “knickknacks”. Rhyme is also detected in last quatrain where Mary Oliver rhymes lines 15-16 “the duties and home , the knife at the throat , the death in the metronome . Assonance can also be found in these lines, because all
