Pneumonia pneumon (word root) + ia (suffix) Pneumon - lungs and air; ia - condition of Definition: inflammation of the lungs After falling ill with the flu, it quickly turned into pneumonia. 3. Meningitis mening (word root) + itis (suffix) Mening - meninges; itis - inflammation Definition: inflammation of the meninges (membranes coverings of the brain and spinal cord) caused by bacterial infection If you were to be diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, you would receive intravenous antibiotics in the hospital.
