Essay Question #3 Topic: Journalism as a business impulse and a lead to civic direction. I. Muckraking: According to President Roosevelt, “journalists who find nothing good about society but look constantly at the negative elements, as if –raking muck.” Reform Journalism. Yellow Journalism: Features scandals or other unethical or unprofessional tactics used by journalists to gain increased circulation. II. A. Muckraking 1. Lincoln Steffens, widely acknowledged as the 1 st muckraker. a. New York Evening Post- Covered mostly Wall Street and NY city b. McClure’s- Greatest of Muckraking journals- 1902 c. He investigated the state of municipal government in the U.S. d. Steffens did more than expose, he added incentive for St. Louis District Attorney Joseph W. Folk to prosecute dozens of city officials. e. Published a book titled, The Shame of the Cities, that helped usher in the city- manager form of government. 2. Ida Minerva Tarbel a. Chautauquan Magazine- covered public health and Education b.
