What it means to be an American using the radio was Father Coughlin’s way of using journalism. He became known as the “Radio priest” in 1926. 1. He focused most of his speaking to economic matters because the nation was enduring the Great Depression. 2. He also discussed politics. 3. Father Coughlin did a weekly sermon based on news events and issues of the day. 4. He took shots at the bankers for causing the country’s fiscal woes. .. 5. By 1932, Coughlin had become so popular that he was employing 100 clerks to process 80,000 letters a week and they had to build a post office to handle his mail. 6. Spoke with a “warm, inviting, mellow, manly, rich, vibrant and electric voice that drew the viewers to him.” B. Walter Lippmann was calling into question the morality of journalists around the country. 1. Lippmann wrote books on philosophy, politics, foreign policy and economics. 2. Lippmann was the original and most prescient analyst of the modern media. 3. He also described how the press corps was carried away on the wave of patriotism and became self-censors, enforcers, and sheer propagandists. Their careerism, cynicism, and error made them destroyers of "liberty of opinion" and agents of intolerance, who subverted the American constitutional system of self-government. III. Description A. Charles Edward Coughlin 1. Born in Ontario, Canada in 1891.
