Americans can’t recreate a similar structure until the 1880’s ○ The Native Americans was smart ○ This is an example of Native American: ■ Sophistication ■ Civilization ■ Cooperation ● Politics ○ Native Americans located in Pennsylvania and New York ○ Iroquois Nation ■ There are five denominations and sects in this Umbrella: ● Oneida ● Mohawk ● Cayuga ● Seneca ● Onondaga ■ Every year representatives of this five sects will convene at a respected location ■ These representatives will discuss issues pertaining to all the people ● They will discuss their relations with there neighbors ● They will discuss about food ● They will discuss tax and rules ■ This a Great Council ● This a representative government ○ When it comes to Civilization and Government there are a lot of similarities ○ We see that Native Americans: ■ They are Diverse ■ They are Sophisticated ■ They are Educated ■ They are Civilized ● The Differences of Native Americans and Europeans ○ The conflict between Native Americans and Europeans ■ Land ● ● ● ● Native Americans knew that they were lands to share They are sharing resources The lands of America is much bigger than Europe Because of the abundance of Land they shared it with the Europeans ● When the Europeans arrived and discovered a lot of resources in America ● People from Europe are trying to find freedom by adding more land ● Native Americans think that the Land is Sacred ■ Spiritualism ● Native Americans believed in the concept of Polytheistic ○ They saw god in all things ○ That’s why they treat everything with respect ● Europeans are Monotheistic ○ They believe that there is only one God ○ They think they can be only be one God ● Because of Native American Spirituality they enabled sharing while the Europeans want to control everything ■ Gender ● In Native American Society most of them are Matrilineal ○ There kinship is with the mother or female line ● European Society is based on Patrilineal ○ There kinship is with the father or male line ● European Religion and their Faith has strict conditions about Gender ● Europeans this why they have a different view towards Native Americans ○ The bottomline is the following: Despite the similarities in: ● Intellect ● Culture ● Governance ● Communication ● Trade ● Knowledge ■ The Differences are everywhere: ● The Differences between Land ● The Differences between Religion ● The Differences between Gender ■ So when the Europeans arrived, they think that they doing the best for the Native Americans ■ The Europeans think that they are better over Native Americans ■ Freedom ● The Europeans are coming in because of Freedom ● For Europeans there is not greater freedom than being free from Sin ■ ● ■ ● When they look at the Native Americans they think that they are too free ● And that’s why they think that the Native Americans should be Controlled and Dominated ● Native Americans had a lot of freedom and Europeans think they are too free ● The thing about Christianity is the ultimate freedom is freedom from sin ● Servitude and Freedom are mutually reinforced because the ultimate exercise of freedom is the ability to be in service to God ● The Christian Church think that Native Americans lacks order and discipline Because of the differences the Native Americans were conquered by the Europeans Piety ○ It is related being to being Religious ○ Money and Religion ○ The desire to eliminate Islamic middlemen and win control of lucrative trade for Christian Western Europe combined to inspire the conquest to direct route to Asia ○ It appears that there is a desire to go to Asia ○ Marco Polo ■ He explores to Asia ■ He goes to Asia through the Middle East ■ They think that the food in asia is interesting ○ Crusades ■ Christians
