1 Exposure and Response Prevention • Purpose • Mechanisms • Treatment techniques • Examples Overall Purpose • Overall goal is to help the patient identify maladaptive behaviors (e.g., avoidance behaviors, rituals) and replace them with healthier ones by gradually (1) exposing them to feared and avoided situations (2) asking them to not engage in any maladaptive behaviors Exposure and Response Prevention • Identify triggers for anxiety/ avoidance behavior (people, places, situations) • Monitor rituals (times, frequency) • Design hierarchy (start with easier situations, work your way up to more challenging ones)
