Many people thought the backbone of the American society was the rebellion of anything European. Involving Americans in this war meant getting involved in Europe. This is this appeal Roosevelt tended to stick to, that staying neutral was to benefit only American’s safety. American’s were not only big in debt, but big in nationalism. Joining the war was a surefire way to go even further into debt. People even thought it could have collapsed the American government if we got involved.However, as Sen.
