They often find non-fictional words intertwined with the science fiction novel, including numerous references to “otjize”, a cultural tradition of the Himba people. During Binti’s journey from Earth to Oomza University many references are made to the importance of the otjize with respect to Binti’s own identity. This however, has a deeper meaning, one that proves the maturation of Binti in this bildungsroman. Over the course of the novel, Binti slowly grows to realize that she is no longer the same person she was when she left Earth, and that simply holding onto her otjize didn’t keep her from changing. Therefore, otjize is not a self-defining object that Binti holds onto for identity purposes.
